Second graders at Forts Ferry Elementary took part in a hands-on learning experience when the Charlie Cart, a fully equipped mobile kitchen, visited the school. As part of a Farm to School learning opportunity, students explored nutrition, food safety, and where food comes from by making homemade ginger ale using fresh ginger from Forts Ferry Farm. The experience helped students compare homemade and store-bought beverages, while building real-world cooking skills in the classroom. Everyone agreed the experience was worthwhile and fun was certainly had by all!

Five schools down, three to go! Friday was Election Day for Boght Hills! It was the fifth elementary school visit for the Bison who loved interacting with all of the students in grades K-5. First, students took part in an assembly where they learned about the history of the district and the Bison. Then, they had a chance to cast their votes. Thanks for having us, Boght Hills! See you soon, Southgate!

Shaker High School senior Rui Zheng recently had the once-in-a-lifetime experience of attending Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) while still in high school. In his junior year, Zheng applied and was accepted to the MIT Introduction to Technology, Engineering, and Science (MITES) Semester. The program serves as a six-month STEM experience, preparing students for college and allowing them to work with and meet like-minded peers. Zheng was one of approximately 300 students admitted to the MITES program, which is open to students nationwide. Read more about this accomplishment on our website:

Earlier this month, our Russian program conducted their annual food drive for the Regional Food Bank. The Russian classes held a friendly competition against each other, collecting non-perishable items to see which class could collect the highest weight per capita. Together the group collected over 1,280 pounds of food for the Regional Food Bank, with the senior class taking home the prize this year. Great job to all involved and thank you for showing us what it means to be a Bison!

The halls were filled with music and cheer at Blue Creek Elementary! On the last day before winter break, Mrs. Sanderl, Mr. Turcio, and our talented fifth graders welcomed students with live music in the lobby during arrival. It was a joyful way to kick off the holiday recess!

Prior to the break, Blue Creek second graders welcomed their families for a special performance celebrating the conclusion of their Tall Tales CKLA unit. After learning about tall tales in ELA, students brought the stories to life by incorporating music, instruments, and songs into their performances. The celebration also featured a gallery of student artwork, proudly displayed by Blue Creek art teacher Elizabeth Schanz, making the event a true showcase of creativity and learning.

To celebrate the conclusion of their Ancient Rome unit, Latham Ridge third grade students welcomed their families for a special afternoon of learning and fun. The auditorium was transformed into a Roman-inspired experience, with students rotating through hands-on stations to create mosaic art, leaf crowns, paper bag puppets, aqueducts, and more. The highlight of the celebration was the chariot races, where students eagerly lined up to compete alongside their classmates. It was a fun and memorable way to race to the finish of the unit!

For the eighth consecutive year, Shaker High School students in Dr. Bell’s English had the chance to meet their pen pals at Avila Retirement Community. The students began exchanging letters with their resident pen pals back in September, but today they were finally able to meet face to face. There was no shortage of topics to cover for the annual event, as discussions ranged how school is different for students now compared to when their pen pals went to school, the activities everyone enjoys in their respective community, and more. Among the smiling faces, dozens of unlikely friendships were also forged, which will hopefully last well into the future.

Mamma Mia, here we go again! The cast of last year’s Shaker High School production of "Mamma Mia" traveled to NYC earlier this week to see the Broadway version. Students also got an opportunity to see the tree at Rockefeller Center on the way. Bravo all around!
