Kindergarten students in helmets ride bikes are part of physical education class.

The North Colonie Central School District is excited to pilot the All Kids Bike program with kindergarten students at Forts Ferry Elementary School this spring.

This innovative program teaches young students the fundamentals of riding a bicycle, helping them develop balance, coordination, confidence, and a lifelong love of physical activity. Throughout the week, students participate in structured lessons during Physical Education classes, progressing at their own pace in a safe and encouraging environment.

The district is proud to partner with Russell Sage College on this initiative under the direction of Peter J. Stapleton, Ph.D., Assistant Provost for Strategic Initiatives, Dean of the Esteves School of Education, and Director of the Center for Teaching & Learning. The program is further supported by Kim Ferrie (adjunct faculty member and retired physical educator), along with several graduate and undergraduate students who are gaining valuable hands-on experience as part of their teacher preparation.

Russell Sage College provided the bikes, helmets, and instructional curriculum, while North Colonie’s Physical Education teachers and district leadership worked collaboratively to facilitate lessons and support student learning.

“This program is a great example of how we can create meaningful, engaging opportunities for our students while also building strong partnerships with higher education,” said Dave Stadtlander, Supervisor of Health, Physical Education & Athletics. “We’re excited about the impact this experience is having on our students and look forward to exploring opportunities to expand it to additional schools in the future.”

As a pilot program, All Kids Bike represents an important step in advancing the district’s commitment to student wellness, physical literacy, and inclusive access to physical activity.
