A group of four Shaker High School students were recognized at the June Board of Education meeting as June North Colonie Kids Care recipients for their efforts to help create a Unified Cheer Team this school year!
Last summer, juniors Ava Lindley, Isabella Valentine, Nevaeh Harrison and Carly Darmetko reached out to the district with an inspiring proposal. All four students are members of the varsity football cheer team and have a desire to ensure that every student, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to experience the sense of community, pride and joy that comes along with being part of a cheer team. They envisioned a program where students with special needs could join with members of the Shaker competition cheer team to perform together.
With the help of Athletic Director Sean Colfer and many others in the district, their vision became a reality and the Unified Cheer Team was born. As their nominator said, “This team is a vibrant example of what is possible when students lead with empathy and initiative. These four students not only identified a gap in inclusion, but took action to bridge it - laying the foundation for a program that will undoubtedly enrich the Shaker community for years to come.”
To further quote their nomination, “Their work is a model of student-led change and a testament to the positive culture fostered within North Colonie schools. I cannot think of a more deserving group to be honored as North Colonie Kids Who Care.” Congratulations Ava, Izzy, Nevaeh and Carly for exemplifying compassion, leadership and a spirit of inclusivity! North Colonie is a better school district because of all of you!
