Shaker High School is home to one of this year's Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Good Citizen Award recipients! Senior Sakthi Jagannath was honored at the Pruyn House on Tuesday, May 13, along with a recipient from Colonie High School. The DAR Good Citizens Award and Scholarship Contest was created in 1934, to encourage and recognizes high school seniors who possess the qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism in their homes, schools and communities.
Sakthi was chosen for this award by her teachers for her activism. As a sophomore, she was nominated to join First Amendment, First Vote, a statewide organization dedicated to mentoring young women interested in law, public policy and potentially service in elective office. Her junior year, Sakthi became part of First Amendment, First Vote's student advisory committee and this year was appointed to their board of directors. Sakthi has continued her work on women's issues in the Civic Engagement program, where she helped to design and launch a campaign to promote menstrual equity. She helped to organize a period product backpack program for students in need at Shaker and is currently working with the United Way to create period products throughout the Capital Region. Sakthi's teachers say her commitment to public service is unparalleled! Congratulations Sakthi!
