"Lights, Camera, Gallery" was the theme of the evening at Shaker High School on Thursday, May 1, as students, families, and friends gathered for the Senior Art Show. The annual art event showcases upper level track artists who have made their way through the major sequence, beginning with Accelerated Art in 8th grade. At the show, students each shared their portfolio works, their current concentration, and their other elective work.
"The student curated Advanced Studio 3 Senior Exhibit is an annual favorite of the department," said Visual & Media Arts District Supervisor Anne Manzella. "It celebrates the strong art foundation in technical skills, media craftsmanship, and creative expression that students have developed through our K-12 Visual Arts Program."
The event was completely student run, curated, developed, decorated, hung, and installed by the group as a whole, overseen by SHS Art Teacher Genevieve Chornyak. The show also invites all art teachers from throughout the district, acknowledging how they have guided students through their art learning journey. A total of 13 students showcased their work at the "Lights, Camera, Gallery" event.
"We are all so proud of the dedication and commitment these students have to their art making," said Chornyak. "The final show gives students an opportunity to showcase their strongest art over the years, and really allows viewers into their individual grouping of content. So much of their art in the upper levels is about content, stories, messages, and how they communicate their messages visually. We hear a lot about the talent they have, but it's so much more than skill - it's storytelling. The gallery at SHS gives students a space to shine, as do athletes on the field, and musicians in a recital."
The movie theme was carried throughout the night, with storyboards, bloopers, and prequel sections of artwork on display. The event also featured a concession stand, red carpet, marquee with artist names, film reel guest book, and many more movie themed details.
"We are so excited to see the mark this amazing group of students will make on the world," said Manzella.
