There were plenty of new things on the lunch menu this week at Shaker Middle School! The school was selected by the New York State Department of Education to be the site for "Chef Take-Over Day." The participating chef and the team worked alongside North Colonie Food Service employees to create a scratch cooked, Farm to School focused meal. The menu for the day included cheese and spinach lasagna, with a bolognese option for the meat lovers and a kale caesar salad. All dishes were created with items sourced from across New York State. After enjoying their lunch, students were invited to vote on the items they tried and give feedback on the menu. It was a delicious day all around!

Second graders at Forts Ferry Elementary took part in a hands-on learning experience when the Charlie Cart, a fully equipped mobile kitchen, visited the school. As part of a Farm to School learning opportunity, students explored nutrition, food safety, and where food comes from by making homemade ginger ale using fresh ginger from Forts Ferry Farm. The experience helped students compare homemade and store-bought beverages, while building real-world cooking skills in the classroom. Everyone agreed the experience was worthwhile and fun was certainly had by all!

Shaker High School senior Rui Zheng recently had the once-in-a-lifetime experience of attending Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) while still in high school. In his junior year, Zheng applied and was accepted to the MIT Introduction to Technology, Engineering, and Science (MITES) Semester. The program serves as a six-month STEM experience, preparing students for college and allowing them to work with and meet like-minded peers. Zheng was one of approximately 300 students admitted to the MITES program, which is open to students nationwide. Earlier this month, our Russian program conducted their annual food drive for the Regional Food Bank. The Russian classes held a friendly competition against each other, collecting non-perishable items to see which class could collect the highest weight per capita. Together the group collected over 1,280 pounds of food for the Regional Food Bank, with the senior class taking home the prize this year. Great job to all involved and thank you for showing us what it means to be a Bison!
