Leigh Stevens: Coach of the Year

Three years ago, Leigh Stevens took a chance on a brand-new program. Today, she stands as the Suburban Council 2026 Flag Football Coach of the Year!

When girls varsity flag football officially launched in Section 2 and across New York State in 2024, Coach Stevens became the inaugural head coach of Shaker's program. What followed has been nothing short of historic. In just three seasons, she helped build one of the premier programs in the state, leading the Bison to their first Sectional Championship, first Regional Championship, and a remarkable run to the NYSPHSAA State Championship game, where they finished as State Runner Up and became the first Section 2 team to reach those heights.

Alongside assistant coaches Austin Kendrick and Ryan Deguire, Coach Stevens has helped create a legacy that will forever change Shaker athletics and elevate girls flag football. Her impact extends far beyond wins and championships. As Section 2 Flag Football Coordinator, a physical education teacher, and a strong advocate for girls athletics, Stevens has helped grow the game from the youth level all the way to varsity competition.

This season, Coach Stevens was also recognized by the New York Giants as their Week 3 High School Girls Flag Football Coach of the Week.

From launching a program that once seemed impossible to becoming one of the most respected leaders in the sport, Coach Stevens has inspired countless student athletes and helped pave the way for the future of girls flag football.

Congratulations, Coach Stevens, on being named Suburban Council Coach of the Year. Thank you for your vision, leadership, and dedication.
