One North Colonie student’s commitment to environmental sustainability is making a difference in our district. Last year as a freshman at Shaker High School, Nancy Chandra championed the idea of bringing textile recycling bins to campus as part of her Civic Engagement and Leadership class. With the support of Ms. Andrea Stupp, Nancy presented the project at a Board of Education meeting last June.
Thanks to Nancy’s research and commitment, two textile recycling bins from Helpsy arrived on campus last month. Helpsy is a Certified B Corporation focused on textile reuse and recycling and offers free bins, free pickups and free data reporting to the district. In addition, the district receives 10 cents for every pound of textiles collected. Below is a list of accepted items. The bins are located on the outside of Arthur Walker Field. One is on the Shaker Middle School side and the other on the Shaker High School side. Please start contributing your used items!
Directions: For re-wear, reuse, and recycling, we accept the following items in any condition for all ages and genders as long as they are clean, dry, and odorless. Everything should be kept dry in a closed, plastic bag. Recycling your clothes should be hard, we're here to help!
