The North Colonie community is invited to attend the first “Holidays Around the World” event on Friday, Dec. 12 from 5-7 p.m. at Shaker High School. The event, hosted by the Cooking & Culture Club, comes following the success of the Multicultural Festival last year. Since then, SHS senior and Cooking & Culture Club President Maya Elliott has been looking for ways for the community to come together to celebrate diversity and culture. Wanting to add to the winter-themed events for the district, Elliott saw a new opportunity to not only host a winter-themed event, but to also give her peers a chance to share their cultural holidays.
“Building community and peer relationships is a very important part of our club's mission,” said Elliott. “We are collaborating with some of the students and clubs that participated in the Multicultural Festival this past spring, as well as some new students. We are in the final stages of planning the event and we could not be more excited.”
The Cooking & Culture Club is looking forward to the community coming together and learning about different late fall and winter holidays celebrated by families. The club aims to help build connections among the North Colonie community, while encouraging increased cultural awareness. Elliott shared that there will be several different holidays featured at this event - some may be widely known, while some may be new to individuals!
“Holidays Around the World” will take place Friday, Dec. 12 from 5-7 p.m. at SHS. The event is free admission and will offer a hot chocolate bar ($3 a person), winter cookie packages freshly baked by SHS students ($10 a package), paper snowflake activities, stations to create holiday cards for nursing homes, dance performances, and more by SHS students. We hope to see you there!
