Shaker Middle School recently showed just how excited they were to welcome all rising fifth-graders for the upcoming 2023-2024 school year.
As part of SMS’s fifth-to-sixth-grade transition program, school officials invited all six elementary schools to visit Shaker Middle School in June. In preparation, some sixth-grade student representatives trained to participate as panelists in a Q&A session, answering typical questions about the transition to middle school. Other student representatives trained as tour guides to give fifth-graders informative tours of the middle school building in a small group format.
All the student representatives spent hours preparing their writing pieces and practicing their public speaking skills.
Several weeks before the program, sixth-grade school counselors Mrs. Esannason and Mrs. Chu worked with this group of current sixth-graders nominated by their teachers to train as “student representatives” to prepare for this special program. These students had excellent time management skills, juggling all the regular middle school expectations while also taking on the additional responsibility of training to lead and assist with the fifth-grade transition program.
SMS staff want to congratulate all the sixth-grade student representatives for their dedication, leadership, and volunteer efforts to serve their community. They represented the sixth-grade class and the Shaker Middle School community overall!

We also want to acknowledge the many individuals who collaborated to make this part of the transition program successful. This includes the elementary school principals, school counselors, fifth-grade teachers, SMS teacher volunteers, and of course, the rising fifth-graders themselves. We are excited to welcome all our incoming sixth-grade students to Shaker Middle School in the fall and look forward to a fantastic 2023-2024 school year!
