National Illustrator James Ransome Captivates LR Students

They had read, and they were ready … to illustrate!

Nationally-recognized children’s book illustrator James Ransome took Latham Ridge Elementary students on a journey they will likely not forget anytime soon. During his two-day visit, his presentations, lunch time spent with students, during drawing sessions, and even a book signing, he captivated students.

And the students captivated him.

“The kids are very enthusiastic,” he said the morning of the second day and as he awaited kindergarten and first graders to fill the front of the auditorium. “They are well prepared, they’ve read a lot of the books.

“A lot of the education takes place before I get here,” he added. “When they are exposed to books. Books are read to them and they understand stories and how pictures work with stories.”

His work is currently on exhibit at the Opalka Gallery on the Russell Sage Albany Campus.

“We are so fortunate to have this regional award winning author and illustrator working with our students!” said Anne Manzella, the North Colonie CSD supervisor of visual and media arts.
