WHAT IS CEIP?

CEIP is a ½-unit elective being offered at Shaker High School to 12th grade students. This course is a New York State accredited program. Students enrolled in this course will spend 54 hours at their internship placement and 27 hours in classroom instruction provided by the Shaker High School Business Department.

The CEIP experience allows students to develop an awareness of what it’s like to work in a career area of interest to them. Students will learn the skills and education needed to be successful in their intended career path.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS & INFORMATION OF THE CEIP PROGRAM:

SALARY/WAGES:

This is a New York State approved non-paid internship program. Students can not accept  monetary compensation
for this learning experience. The student will receive ½-unit of credit.

INSURANCE:

The student intern will be insured by the North Colonie Central School District. The program is in compliance with
State/Federal Labor and Education Laws.

NUMBER OF MENTORS & EXPERIENCES:

The student can be assigned to one or more mentors within a placement. When appropriate, the student may split
their internship between two placements. Changes can be made while a student is assigned, if for whatever reason
the placement is not conducive to the mentor and/or the intern.

TRANSPORTATION:

Students in this program are responsible for their own transportation to and from the internship.

SCHEDULING:

The time in which the mentor and intern will meet will be decided upon by the teacher/coordinator, intern,
and mentor at the first meeting. A schedule that meets the needs of both the intern and cooperating
mentor will be developed.

Students may intern:

  • Weekdays
  • Weekends
  • School vacations

Students may not intern:

  • Past 10:00 PM on school nights
CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES:

Students will be required to complete various assignments in class that are specific to their career goals and foster career readiness.

JOURNALS:

Each student is required to maintain a weekly log/journal of his/her experiences. This will be handed in to a CEIP coordinator at the end of their experience as part of the final evaluation.

GRADING:

A short evaluation form will be provided for each mentor to evaluate the interns. Students are graded
on a pass/fail basis and must complete all requirements and assignments to receive a “passing” grade for the course.
