Congratulations to Shaker High School juniors Sam Syeda and Simran Nichani who have been named the North Colonie Kids Care recipients for January! Sam and Simran were nominated for their work to start a Science Olympiad at Shaker Middle School.
Both members of Science Olympiad at the high school, they recognized a need at the middle school level and took it upon themselves to find a faculty advisor, a space to meet and got the club started. Mr. Steadham, a science teacher at SMS, says Sam and Simran are kind and that they want everyone who comes out for Science Olympiad to feel welcome and like they have a role to play on the team... so much so that they even put together a second team to allow more students to participate. This is a wonderful example of students not only advocating for increased opportunities for other students, but also putting in the work to make it all happen. Congratulations Sam and Simran, and thank you for being kids who care here in North Colonie!

There were plenty of new things on the lunch menu this week at Shaker Middle School! The school was selected by the New York State Department of Education to be the site for "Chef Take-Over Day." The participating chef and the team worked alongside North Colonie Food Service employees to create a scratch cooked, Farm to School focused meal. The menu for the day included cheese and spinach lasagna, with a bolognese option for the meat lovers and a kale caesar salad. All dishes were created with items sourced from across New York State. After enjoying their lunch, students were invited to vote on the items they tried and give feedback on the menu. It was a delicious day all around!

Earlier this month, our Russian program conducted their annual food drive for the Regional Food Bank. The Russian classes held a friendly competition against each other, collecting non-perishable items to see which class could collect the highest weight per capita. Together the group collected over 1,280 pounds of food for the Regional Food Bank, with the senior class taking home the prize this year. Great job to all involved and thank you for showing us what it means to be a Bison!

Congratulations to Boght Hills fifth grader James Nagle, who is being recognized as the December North Colonie Kids Care recipient. James was nominated by Ms. Cristi Davis, Ms. Carrie Trimarci, Ms. Heather Garcia and Ms. Dawn Scott, for what he does on a daily basis at school. Not only does James show kindness to his peers, but he encourages classmates both academically and socially. He helps other students feel included during recess by inviting them into games they might not have joined without his encouragement.
His teachers say James acts as a role model of empathy, often checking in on his peers who are upset or hesitant. He also served as a Bus Buddy for the first few months of school, helping kindergartners get on the bus and teaching them how to ride it safely. James truly a wonderful representative of what it means to be a leader. Thank you, James, for your kindness toward others and for always going the extra mile to make sure your classmates feel included and welcome.
