The 2025-26 school year kicked off with more than just a welcome, it began with looking back at 75 years of North Colonie. Board of Education President Linda Harrison and Superintendent Kathleen Skeals shared a message with faculty that tied today’s excitement to the district’s roots. When North Colonie grew from 12 small districts into the larger school community we know today. Closing her remarks, Superintendent Skeals shared: “I think our founders would be proud. I know I am.”

The welcome was followed by a performance of “Glorious” by SHS seniors Grace and Jackson Majewski, accompanied by music teacher Amy Kimbler. Staff then broke into groups for additional first-day preparations.

We’re counting down to the #nccsdfirstday and can’t wait to see our students on Thursday, Sept. 4!

Please join us in giving a warm welcome to the 51 new practitioners joining North Colonie CSD! The group started off Monday with a welcome message from North Colonie Superintendent of Schools Kathleen Skeals, who offered an overview of the district mission and words of encouragement for the year ahead.

"We're helping kids be the best version of themselves possible," said Skeals. "There are days that are hard, but there is no better job you can do."

The group, which consisted of teachers, specialists, and support staff, then went on to introduce themselves to the room. Each introduction offered a chance to showcase unique talents, fresh ideas, and a passion for helping our students thrive. Welcome to our new practitioners - we’re excited to have you as part of the North Colonie family! #NC75

Meet Dr. Brian Carey, North Colonie’s new Assistant Superintendent for Business. A Capital Region native, Dr. Carey grew up in Clifton Park before moving to Babylon in third grade. He and his wife returned to Upstate New York knowing, "wanted our children to attend North Colonie schools. We recognized opportunities here that we simply didn’t see in other districts." In 2024, their son graduated from Shaker High School. “Throughout his time here, he found a place where he was not only challenged academically, but also engaged in sports and a variety of extracurricular activities,” Dr. Carey shared.

Before joining North Colonie, Dr. Carey spent eight years as the Assistant Superintendent for Business and Support Services at Schodack Central School District, where he oversaw departments including finance, facilities, transportation, technology, food services, and capital projects. His background also includes leadership roles at the Northeastern Regional Information Center (NERIC), where he managed multi-million dollar budgets and worked with districts across the region. He holds a Ph.D. in Education Policy and Leadership from the University at Albany, where his research focused on employee retention in school transportation.

“What excites me most about this role is the chance to be part of a district that genuinely values its students, staff, and community,” he said. “Being able to contribute to an organization so committed to excellence and support is incredibly motivating.”

He’s also always up for a good conversation about personal finance. “I’m always happy to chat with anyone who’s interested in the topic!” Please join us in welcoming Dr. Carey!

On June 20, Forts Ferry Principal Dr. Casey Parker made good on his promise for the Principal’s Challenge! He vowed that if students raised $20,000 for the new adaptive playground, each class would get the chance to throw water balloons at him, and they did not disappoint. In just two weeks, the school soared past its goal, raising over $25,000! A big thank you to Michelle Duggan and the PTA for helping make this possible. #throwbackthursday

Another day, another Senior Walk Through! Wednesday morning, graduating Shaker seniors strolled the halls of Forts Ferry, where they attended elementary school. The Lions threw quite the celebration! There was a bubble machine, streamers and signs galore to go along with congratulatory signs and cheers from current students and teachers. At the end of it all, the graduates took a group photo on the playground and some took one last ride on the swings.
