A group of Shaker Middle School sixth graders are being recognized as the North Colonie Kids Care recipients for the month of October. Mikaila Russell, Olivia Gardner, Madison Fowler, Gia Valenti, Caroline Hunt, Evelyn Tumbusch, Hadley Coughlin, Everly Gregory and Madison Reichert all helped create a rain barrel system for the Blue Creek school garden, which also earned them their Bronze Award, the highest honor for Junior Girl Scouts.

This group was nominated by district Farm to School Facilitator Mrs. Amber Cost and Blue Creek Principal Mr. Chris Turcio. The students researched, met with Mr. Turcio and Mrs. Cost to present their plan and obtain approval, built the system themselves, secured donated materials, and used cookie money to fund the rest of the project. They even decorated the barrel with their school mascots and handprints. In the nomination, Mrs. Cost said the following:

"We are proud to nominate an inspiring group of Girl Scouts from Troop 5034 for the “Kids Care” award. These remarkable young leaders, made up of students from both Blue Creek and Southgate Elementary (now middle school), demonstrated initiative, teamwork, and a deep sense of responsibility in creating a rain barrel system for the Blue Creek school garden.

Recognizing the need for sustainable water practices, the troop designed and executed a project that now helps collect and conserve rainwater for garden use. They didn’t stop at just building the rain barrel—they went above and beyond by developing an engaging and persuasive presentation to explain the importance of their project, showing impressive communication skills and environmental awareness.

From installing a functional rain gutter to capture runoff from the roof, to creatively decorating the barrel with their handprints and school mascots, every step reflected thoughtfulness, creativity, and care. Their work is not only a valuable addition to the garden—it’s a symbol of community pride and environmental stewardship.

These Girl Scouts exemplify what it means to be “kids who care.” Their efforts have made a lasting impact on their school, their peers, and the planet."

Congratulations to all of you!
