Two Shaker students, Hannah Thukral and Kayla Na, participated in the regional competition for Poetry Out Loud, a national poetry recitation contest. The regional competition was held February 5 at Hudson Valley Community College.

Thukral and Na were selected as regional contestants out of 15 Shaker students at the Shaker High School competition held on January 9.

“The humor, humanity, and depth that Hannah brought to her recitations, especially ‘Mingus at the Showplace,’ reflect the sincerity and joy that define her as a student in my class,” said SHS teacher Ms. Matrose. “We are all so proud of her performance and of her talent and grace throughout the contest.”

“Kayla Na offered the audience an intelligent and moving interpretation of three exacting poems,” said SHS teacher Ms. Wade. “One couldn’t help but be impressed by the range of tonal nuances-from eerie to whimsical-that Kayla showcased in her recitation. It was a delight to witness.”
