Exchange students from Germany and Costa Rica will have an opportunity to experience a North Colonie tradition: the homecoming football game. It’s just one of many encounters the students will have during their stay in Latham.

A group of 25 German exchange students and two chaperones from Saarbrücken arrived in Latham on Sept. 19 for a two-week stay with Shaker High School juniors and seniors. The tradition dates back more than a decade for the district and its sister school in Germany.

This is the first year the school has organized an exchange with students from the Humboldt School in Costa Rica. A group of 19 students and two chaperones arrived in Latham on Sept. 25 for an eight-day visit.

“Having these students from Germany and Costa Rica attend Shaker High School enriches our school.  All our students benefit from learning about other cultures while making new friendships,” said Shaker High School Principal Richard Murphy. “We are grateful to all our teachers and parents from the three different schools who made this incredible experience possible.”

During their stay in the United States, the exchange students and chaperones stay with Shaker families and attend classes at the high school. In addition, they will participate in several group activities, including trips to New York City and Boston, a visit to New York State Museum, and tours of the New York State Capitol and Siena College.

“The exchange program broadens students’ world view,” said Brenna Muldoon, District K-12 Supervisor for Bilingual Education and World Languages. “Students have the opportunity to meet and get to know people from other countries and cultures. They learn that we’re really not so different from each other.”

Shaker students participating in the Costa Rican exchange traveled to San Jose in February 2018. Students stayed with families, attended classes and visited renowned cultural sites.

Students participating in the German exchange will be traveling to Germany in February 2019 and will also stay with families and travel to various cities including Berlin.
