Southgate recently sponsored a Family Book Night, involving the 2015 Caldecott Honor Book, The Right Word: Roget and His Thesaurus. The book is a biography about the famous wordsmith and originator of the thesaurus, Peter Mark Roget.
12 fifth graders and their parents enjoyed reading the book in the preceding weeks and then came together for a pizza dinner, conversation, and fun word and art activities. Assisted by teachers Ms. Parmalee, Ms. Aldous, Ms. Tabatabai, Ms. Ostwald, and Principal Dedrick, the participants created posters and accompanying illustrations that are displayed around the school. In the spirit of Roget, the “word list man,” teams of students and parents brainstormed lots of fun words.
Everyone agreed that the book was a great read and that it was enjoyable to participate in activities as a child/parent/school partner. Thank you to all our families who chose to participate.
If you’re interested in reading the book, the Southgate Library has several copies to loan. You may see Ms. Parmalee to borrow one. In March, Southgate will sponsor a 3rd grade Family Book Night. Stay tuned for details, including the book choice!
