The awards recognize women in various sectors who empower other women, both young and old.Deputy Superintendent Skeals was nominated by a team of people from the North Colonie community, including teachers, administrators, parents, and community members. She says she is humbled, honored, and very proud.

“I can’t think of an award that would be more meaningful to me,” said Ms. Skeals.

Ms. Skeals was appointed to the position of assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction for North Colonie in September 2010. That position’s title was changed to Deputy Superintendent in 2017 to reflect evolving responsibilities. She started her career in North Colonie in 1988 as an English teacher at Shaker Junior High School. Ms. Skeals is a Fulbright Scholar having completed a year of teaching in England, has been honored by the New York State Council of English Teachers as Educator of the Year, and was selected as a Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction in 2010.

“I’ve always wanted to help support our young women, help them see themselves as leaders,” said Ms. Skeals. “You can be a compassionate leader and a strong leader at the same time. Compassion is not a weakness. In fact, it’s your greatest strength as a leader.”

The YWCA of the Greater Capital Region will hold a reception in November to honor Ms. Skeals and all the other honorees. The YWCA-GCR houses over 100 women and over 50 children that would otherwise be homeless or live in substandard housing. This is the 19th year for the Resourceful Women’s Awards put on by the YWCA-GCR.
