SJHS student finishes ninth place in NYS Geography Bee
After winning the SJHS Geography Bee against over 70 seventh and eighth graders, Shashank Salgam (grade 7) went on to finish in the top 10 at the 2018 New York State Geography Bee competition on April 6.
About 100 qualifiers, including Salgam, came from all around the state to participate in the competition where they were broken up into five groups of 20 for the preliminary rounds.
Each group was asked eight questions per student about the United States and World Geography. Normally, the top 10 scorers out of the 100 would advance to the final rounds. However, it turned out that Salgam and 15 other students answered all of the questions correctly leading them to qualify for a tie-breaker round in order to pare the group down to the top 10.
Salgam answered each of his questions correctly, making it to the top 10 and finishing ninth overall in the competition.
Congratulations to Shashank on his wonderful accomplishment!
