SJHS student finishes 8th at New York State Geography Bee
Congratulations to Shaker Junior High School student Shashank Salgam, who placed in the top 10 at the 2019 New York State Geography Bee! The Bee took placed March 29 in Albany at the New York State Museum’s Clark Auditorium. The competition was part of a nationwide one sponsored by the National Geographic Society.
Shashank won the SJHS GeoBee competition for the second straight year and then took a statewide written test to qualify for the New York State competition. To qualify, he had to be in the top 100 qualifiers statewide. The winner of the New York State Geography Bee goes on to represent New York at the National Championship in Washington, D.C.
In the preliminary round of the state competition, Shashank answered all eight questions about United States and world geography correctly, advancing to the final round of the top 10 scorers. Shashank then made it to the final 8 before being eliminated and finishing in 8th place statewide.
