On June 16, Heavy Traffic, a 16″ x 40″ mixed media artwork created by Shaker High School junior Samahria Alpern, was displayed at Albany Law School during a New York State Continuing Legal Education seminar entitled Human Trafficking — An Upstate Perspective. The seminar was sponsored by the Third Judicial District Gender Fairness Committee in coordination with Albany Law School and various national, state, and county legal and law enforcement organizations including the Albany County Coalition Against Domestic Abuse, the National Association of Women Judges, and the NYS Bar Association Committee on Immigration Representation. Speakers at the seminar included law enforcement officials, judges, victim advocates, and NYS Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman.
Alpern created the work as her final project in the Advanced Studio 1 art course. The assignment required her to depict a current social issue using paint, photographs, and one other medium, for which she chose ink.
