SHS Speech & Debate Teams compete in first competition of the year
Shaker High School’s Speech and Debate Club attended their first competition of the year at Mount Markham High School on Saturday, Nov. 23. Fifteen members attended the competition, and Shaker won an honorable mention in the team sweeps category. In addition, the following teams placed in their debates:
- Alvira Tyagi and Izzy Cowan placed first in Intermediate Public Forum debate;
- Roshni Ramesh and Hannah Lee placed third in Novice Public Forum debate;
- Dolly Bhashyam placed third in Intermediate Lincoln Douglas debate; and
- Aarya Tyagi and Sudhanva Rao had a second-place finish in Novice Public Forum debate.
The two first-time freshmen debaters also won a half-bid to the state tournament next spring.
“Preparing for the competition taught me a lot about how to develop thorough reasoning and better my public speaking,” said Tyagi. “It was a really great experience,” Rao added.
Vincent Zhang, another first-time debater, also won a half-bid to states with his second-place finish in the Novice Lincoln Douglas debate. “The competition was very fun and I learned a lot,” Zhang said.
Congratulations to all!
