Shaker High School FIRST Robotics Team 2791 participated in Girls World Expo, a one-day event presented by the Albany Girls Advisory Board, in partnership with iHEARTMEDIA and numerous sponsors. Shaker Robotics has a growing membership of girls, making the team a good fit with the event organizers’ mission to inspire and empower girls.
Throughout the day, a rotation of 12 students and four adult and RPI student mentors staffed a booth that displayed the 2016 competition robot, several years of competition awards, and fun activities. Students answered many questions from curious girls about the robot, the team and the FIRST Robotics program. In the afternoon, the robot took center stage for a demonstration of its capabilities. Team leaders explained the game challenge that the robot was designed for; detailed the purpose and function of the vision-tracking camera and other features of the robot; and described the FIRST program’s pipeline. Students took questions from the audience and allowed a few curious attendees to take the controls and drive the robot.
The event helped Team 2791 students gain experience with public speaking, expanded the event’s STEM aspect, and raised awareness of the FIRST Robotics program in the community. Outreach and education is a critical component of the FIRST Robotics program.
