General Information

Please read this information carefully before signing up. 

Please check the list of dates to make sure you are available for all scheduled classes and Drives. NYSDMV and NYSED law mandates, 16 ninety-minute drives and 16 ninety-minute classes plus a mandated parent and student orientation. Students may not miss any classes or drives to receive the certificate.    

The Shaker High School Driver Education course is offered three times each year to students who hold a NYS DMV Learners Permit or License. It is offered during the, fall, spring, and summer terms. Students are enrolled via online sign-ups. The course is open to all Shaker High School students first, and then to other students if openings remain. The course consists of 24 hours of classroom instruction and 24 hours of in-car instruction. Upon completion, students receive both the NYS DMV “Five-Hour Certificate” and the MV285 certificate used for insurance reduction and license upgrade.

Tuition

There are a limited number of spots each semester. Shaker High School students will be registered first. If there is room, students will be accepted from other schools.  Shaker High School students will be scheduled in order from the online registration. You will be notified by email of your classroom and drive time. Once notified, you will have two days to bring a check or money order to Shaker High School room C104 between 7 and 8AM to secure your spot. The check or money order in the amount of $450 should be payable to NCCS. (North Colonie Central Schools). 

Note: Driver Education is a self-funded program and the tuition pays the program expenses. 

Cash cannot be accepted. Reduced tuition is available for North Colonie residents who participate in the free and reduced lunch program. If you have any questions, please email Eric Phillips.

Fall 2019

Registration for fall 2019 will open on Tuesday, Sept. 3 at 8 a.m.

Registration will be online only. Students will need their nine digit license or permit number to register. There are a limited number of spots and all classes and cars are filled in order from the online registration. Please do not register more than once.

Once you register your request, you will be contacted with a class and drive time. This will be about 48 hours after registration. (Requested times are not guaranteed.) If you agree to the time and agree to attend all the class and drive dates, please bring a check to the Shaker High School main office and place it in the driver education mail box on the first day of school, Monday, Sept. 9 to lock your spot. Spots not paid for by Tuesday, Sept. 10 at noon will be offered to the students on the wait list. Mandatory orientation will be on Thursday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. in the Shaker High School Auditorium.

Please note:

  • All students and a parent must attend the mandatory orientation on Thursday, Sept. 12.
  • Three classroom times to choose from: Monday: 4:30 p.m., Monday 6 p.m., Friday 2:30 p.m.
  • In car instruction times to choose at signup.
    • (There are 21 different times, 4 students per car to accommodate 84 students) :
    • 6 a.m. weekday mornings (20 students)
    • 2:30 p.m. weekday (24 students)
    • 4:30 p.m. weekday (24 students)
    • Saturday 10:30 a.m. or 12 p.m. (8 students)
    • Saturday afternoon 1:30 p.m. or 4 p.m. (8 students)

A list of all mandatory class and drive dates can be found here. Please make sure you are available to attend all classes and drives. If all classes and drives are not completed, the student will not receive the MV285 completion certificate.
