NY Senator Neil Breslin (D) visited Shaker High School to present a resolution passed by both houses of the legislature and signed by Governor Andrew Cuomo that declares April, 2016 as Russian American history month in the state of NY. The resolution, which will be permanently housed at the NYS Capitol, acknowledges the great role Russian Americans have played in the history of the United States, and encourages learning opportunities for students in schools and communities.
“When we study languages, we get the unique perspective that there are far more commonalities between people than differences, and the differences, in many cases, are manufactured by others,” said Superintendent Joseph Corr. “But we really truly have much in common, and we should celebrate that.”
Superintendent Corr also acknowledged the good work that the Shaker High School foreign language department does on a regular basis, led by Galina Kats. All of the students who study the Russian foreign language at Shaker were present for the presentation of the resolution.
