Last week Shaker Middle School celebrated Cultural Attire Day. Students proudly wore the traditional garments from their countries and shared the stories of their customs and traditions with classmates and staff. Some countries that were represented were Japan, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, Algeria, and Sudan. Few. “It was a great day and the students were so proud. It was an awesome way to learn about each other, and have students teach others about their cultures. Some even learned that their peers shared the same culture, allowing them to make new connections with one another,” said Alice Estevez, Shaker Middle School ENL/admin intern.

Shaker High School Latin Teacher Edythe Malara, French Teacher Sara Detmer, and the World Language Department, ran a collection for Ukrainian refugees. Students and staff at SHS donated items including diapers, sheets, shampoo, baby food, backpacks filled with medical supplies, personal care items, and more. According to Ms. Malara, when the items were dropped off at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Church in Watervliet, they couldn’t believe the amount they managed to donate in just one week.
