North Colonie Music Department receives prestigious 2013 NYSSMA award

| December 11, 2014

The 2013 NYSSMA Presidential Citation Award presented to the North Colonie Central School District.

North Colonie is the recipient of the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) 2013 Presidential Citation, the only school district statewide to receive the honor this year. The award is presented to select New York State school districts for their dedication and commitment to a quality music education. The award was presented to Superintendent D. Joseph Corr and members of the North Colonie music department at the NYSSMA Winter Conference held in Rochester on December 6.

The district was chosen based on an extensive 75-page application submitted by District Music Supervisor Deborah Keough. It included information on the district’s music curriculum, performing ensembles, staff development, assessments, department policies, programs and enrollments. Recordings and concert programs from the elementary, junior high and high school were also submitted, as were summaries of student awards and high scores received by individuals and ensembles in NYSSMA Solo and Major Organization festivals.

The application highlighted the inclusion of world-renowned musicians in the North Colonie schools, including the vocal jazz quartet New York Voices in 2012 and The 5 Browns piano siblings in 2006. North Colonie also collaborates every year with local and regional arts organizations to bring their artistry directly to students with the Saratoga Performing Arts Center and the Philadelphia Orchestra.

“Your music program is one to be emulated,” said NYSSMA President Marc Greene. “We hope that this award shows in some small way, the esteem in which the North Colonie Central School District is held by the state’s music educators and the appreciation that NYSSMA has for your district’s support of a quality music program. We applaud your contribution to music education and to the students of your district.”
