Lifeguard Review Course

| March 28, 2016

All lifeguards need to take a review course every two years (a lifeguard challenge course no longer exists).

Lifeguard Review Course

Shaker High School will be offering the course on May 18, 2019 from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. The course fee will be $100 and you must pre-register for the course by May 15. There will be a cut off of 30 participants, so register ASAP. Make checks payable to the Shaker High School. Download the registration form.

Certification Requirements

  • Pass 2 written tests with a minimum grade of 80% or better.
  • Successfully complete four final skill scenarios
  • Successfully perform all critical skills

You must show that you are currently certified in Lifeguarding/CPR/FA/AED.  If not, you will have to sign up for a full lifeguarding course.  Bring proof of your certification, book and mask to the review course.  As of February 2017, the course has been updated, please go to and look at the changes. Please note: there are several MAJOR changes. Study your CPR/AED/First Aid material as well. The current book has review pages.

If you have any questions, please see Mrs. Kippen or email at

CPR for the Professional Rescuer/AED/FA Challenge Course

If you are a lifeguard and want to keep your certification current, you must update your CPR for the Professional Rescuer/AED/First Aid card every year. Even though it says it is good for 2 years, NYS requires a yearly update.

The course will be offered on Wednesday, June 5 from 2:30–4:30 p.m. in H 3 & 4 gym.

A registration form must be completed by Wednesday, May 29. You must pre-register. We will not accept registration forms after this date due to new policies from the Red Cross. Download the registration form.

The cost for CPR/AED is $70.

You will also need your own pocket mask. The test material is based upon the book issued 2017.  You can view the book and also purchase a mask online at the Red Cross Store. Many students are failing the written exam. You need to score an 80 or better on the written exam.
