Junior Parent Letter – January 2019
Dear Current Juniors and Parents:
Making plans for beyond high school becomes increasingly important during the second semester of the junior year. In order to assist you with your decision, we want to call your attention to an upcoming event:
“Making Post High School Plans”…this is a special evening program for juniors and their parents to be held on Thursday, February 14, 2019, at 6:30 PM in the Auditorium. The agenda will be as follows:
- Introduction and Orientation – ALL STAY IN THE AUDITORIUM
- Mr. Richard Murphy, Principal Shaker High School
- Mr. Brian Spofford, Taft Hall Principal
Participants then choose sessions on the following topics:
- Money: Don’t Let College Loans Destroy You
- Mr. Greg Eckl: Financial Advisor, MBA
- Information presented will include financing private college vs public, student loans and future debt
- Factors that Influence Admission to a Competitive College
- Mr. Jason Berry: Senior Assistant Director of Admissions, Syracuse University
- Discussion will focus on college essays, interviews, recommendations, and other factors
- State University of NY (SUNY): The Four-Year Colleges
- Ms. Marcia Hoyte-King: Associate Director of Admissions, University at Albany
- Presentation will include the benefits of SUNY, the application and admissions process, the importance of a student’s high school program
- Attending a Private College
- Ms. Geneen Bolton: Associate Director of Admissions, Hartwick College
- Presentation will include benefits of a private college, application, admissions standards and patterns; importance of a student’s high school program
- Choosing a Career/Transfer Program at a Two-Year College
- Ms. Kathleen Dowd-Freese: Associate Director of Admission, Schenectady County Community College
- Discussion will focus on transferring from a two-year to a four-year college and employment opportunities after receiving an Associate’s Degree
- Military Service
- Representatives of the Armed Forces will be available at tables in the corridor to provide information
