A former Forts Ferry and Shaker High School graduate recently completed a mural in the main entrance area at Forts Ferry Elementary School that is literally “out of this world.” The theme of the mural is space exploration; a futuristic concept that intentionally contrasts with the school’s other mural that features a look at history.
2010 Shaker High School graduate Alexis Hannah reached out to her former elementary school offering her services as a mural painter, and began work on the project in October.
To create the mural, the young artist interviewed elementary students during lunch periods, took their pictures, and incorporated images of many current students into the mural that sits on a large canvas outside the main office.
Forts Ferry Principal Candace Lobdell said it was a unique experience to have a former student work on-site in the school, and was a great opportunity for students, faculty and staff to see the work evolve and be painted right before their eyes.
“It was exciting for the students to be included in the composition of the mural,” she said.
“It was really great for students to appreciate the “process” as much as the “product” of the visual artwork,” added Shaker High School Art Department Supervisor, Anne Manzella.
The mural project by Alexis Hannah was funded through the Forts Ferry PTA.
