Best School District, Tutoring help, Vaccine Clinic/PSA & Weekly Boost

Dear North Colonie families,

I am thrilled to share the news that once again we made it in the Times Union’s Best of the Capital Region! For the second consecutive year, North Colonie was named Best School District. For three years prior to that you might remember, Shaker won the best high school in the region. We couldn’t be more proud of all of our schools and our community. Thank you for your support.

Shaker Helping Hands tutoring program

If your elementary school child needs one-on-one tutoring help, students at Shaker High School are available to support our students in grades 1-6. Their program, Shaker Helping Hands, works to provide academic support to our younger learners via Zoom. More than 20 tutors are ready to work with our students. For more information and to sign up for a session, visit the Shaker Helping Hands website.

Vaccine clinic for individuals age 16+ on April 24

North Colonie and South Colonie have partnered with Colonie EMS and Albany County to sponsor a vaccination clinic for Colonie residents who are 16 years and older. The clinic will be tomorrow, April 24 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Shaker High School H Gymnasium.

You must sign up ahead of time by using this link to make your appointment.

Please note that this Pfizer vaccine is a two-part vaccine. Those vaccinated on April 24 will get their second dose at the same time and location on May 15. If you are not able to return on that date, please do not register at this time. There will be more opportunities in the future.

We provided information for families about the vaccination process and what to expect on our website.

Shaker students made this PSA about the COVID-19 vaccine.

Weekly Boost

  • We are so proud of the SHS students who are finalists in the statewide High School Fed Challenge! Their research and analysis yielded a report that will be among 12 papers to be published in the inaugural issue of the Journal of Future Economists this summer.
  • Shaker students recognized with honors at the 2021 Capital Region Media Arts Festival. This year, nearly 200 artworks were submitted from 18 school districts. Out of the twenty students who were presented with honors, six were from SHS. Learn more and view a slideshow of student work.
  • Way to go Shaker freshman Alyssa Kearns and 8th grader Alyssa Caiano for making the Gymnastics All-Stars second team!
  • Congratulations to Petyon Strand and Layla Shipley, our Athletes of the Week from varsity volleyball! Read how both players have been instrumental in our many wins throughout the season.

As always, thank you for doing your part to keep our community safe.

Sincerely,

D. Joseph Corr
Superintendent of Schools
