Bus Safety
Going to School:
-
Arrive at the bus stop at least five minutes
before the scheduled pick up time.
-
Children should be dressed appropriately for
the weather.
-
Avoid clothing with hanging items or
strings.
-
Backpacks should not have hanging items, and
be small enough to sit on the child’s lap, or on the floor
between their legs.
-
Children should wear their backpacks getting
on or off the bus.
Never run after a moving school bus!
If you are not waiting at the stop when the bus
arrives, consider it as having missed the bus. Do not try to catch
up to the bus in your car, and send your child up alongside to
board.
Going From School:
Step off the bus, and move 15 feet away from the
bus. If walking back toward the rear of the bus, move as close to
the edge of the road as possible, or stay on the sidewalk. If you
can touch the bus, you are too close.
NEVER try to retrieve or pick up any dropped items that fall under
or near the bus. Either tell an adult that can try to get the
driver’s attention, or wait away from the bus until the bus has left
the area. Only the driver can retrieve an item under the bus, if
they choose to do so.
Crossing in Front of the Bus:
-
If your child has to cross the street
getting on or off the bus, instruct him or her to wait for the
driver to give the signal to do so.
-
For pick up, the student must wait until the
bus comes to a complete stop, with its “reds” flashing.
-
Make eye contact with the driver, and wait
for his signal to cross.
-
When signaled to cross, look both ways, then
cross quickly (not running) 10 feet in front of the bus, then
walk down to the bus, and board.
-
If the driver honks the horn (indicating
danger) when you begin to cross, go back to where you started.
-
For Drop off, students should get off the
bus, and walk 10 feet or 10 steps ahead of the bus, and wait for
the driver’s signal to cross.
-
When signaled to cross, go directly across,
looking both ways when halfway.
