The Association of Mathematics Teachers of NYS Journal puts out a quarterly publication each year with a section titled “Elementary Problems.” The journal  proposes a series of four or five problems that students in grades K-6 can submit answers to. In the spring of 2015, three Southgate Alternate Math students, Ivyann Shen, Victoria Silverstrim, and Mary Kate Sullenberg submitted answers. The students are in Melissa Vatalaro’s class.

“The journal looks for detailed explanations from the students and not necessarily the right answer,” said Vatalaro. “Two of our students did not have the correct answer during this past content, but were published because the judges were impressed with how well they explained their mathematical thinking.”

Ivyann Shen submitted a correct solution, which is published in the September 2015 edition of the AMTNYS Journal. Students Mary Kate Sullenberg and Victoria Silverstrim were given honorable mentions because of the “overcounting” they demonstrated, and their detailed explanations.

“I’m really proud of the students for being published mathematicians,” said Vatalaro.
