Shaker’s German exchange students attend a welcome breakfast with their hosts during the first day of their visit to the United States.

18 German exchange students and three chaperones from Saarbrücken arrived in Latham this week for a two week stay with Shaker High School juniors and seniors. This is a ten-year tradition for the district and its sister school in Germany.

During their two-week stay in the United States, Shaker’s German guests will stay with Shaker families and attend classes at the junior high and high school. In addition, they will participate in numerous group activities, including trips to New York City and Boston, a visit to Hancock Shaker Village, and a tour of the New York State Capitol.

“The exchange will provide students a once in a lifetime opportunity to have a first-hand experience of the culture and language students learn in their classrooms,” said North Colonie Foreign Language Department Supervisor Galina Kats. “Both the participants of the program and the entire district community will benefit.”

In February of 2017, Shaker students will travel to Germany to visit the district’s partner school in Saarbrücken. Students will stay with German families, attend classes, and visit renowned cultural and historical sites in Berlin.
