Members of Shaker High School’s Key Club present a $398 check to the Alzheimer’s Association-Northeastern New York Chapter.

In just one year, the number of participants in Shaker High School’s Key Club has grown by a third, with 100 active members in the school. The club chairs various community service events throughout the year, with its most recent being a fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association-Northeastern New York Chapter.

The fundraiser was held at Wendy’s Restaurant on Rt. 9 in Latham, with 15 percent of all sales donated to the association. A total of $398 was raised and was a cumulative effort.

“It was so rewarding for all of us,” said Key Club member Joseph Raiti, a senior at Shaker. “Being able to support something like this, where we can involve the entire community for a common goal, was special for all of us.”

Key Club members Caroline Conboy, Katrina Manzari and Anna Dominguez co-chaired the event, which has been held for three years. Flyers were sent to all of the elementary schools to encourage participation.

Stefanie Bastien, the Alzheimer’s Association’s Special Events Coordinator, says the money raised helps provide local programs and services and supports valuable research.

“We are so grateful for the continued support of the Key Club,” said Bastien.

“That’s what we’re here for,” added Raiti. “Whatever difference we can make, we are happy to do.”
