An entirely student-founded and student-run program, “Girls Take Charge”, held its 4th annual “Women in Leadership” event. The club’s co-chairs, Anum Hussain and Amber McKay, put together a panel of community members to speak to the club on overcoming adversity that women and girls face while striving for leadership.

Panelists included:

Anne McEntee – President & CEO of GE Renewables
Ann Anderson – Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Union College
Paula Mahan – Supervisor of the Town of Colonie
Lisa Travis – Director at the Town of Colonie
Ashley Miller – Sports Photojournalist at WNYT

Dozens of Shaker Junior High School and Shaker High School girls were in attendance. The Girls Take Charge program was created based on a concept where high school girls go to the adjacent junior high school and mentor the younger girls in various subjects, including self-confidence, body image, and leadership skills.

The club is co-advised by Shaker Junior High School counselor, Stacey Angell, and Shaker High School teacher, Katherine Palanza.

“This was truly an incredible experience for our girls,” said Angell. “Having these amazing role models take time out of their busy schedules to spend an afternoon with high school and junior high school girls was so wonderful. Thank you Anum and Amber for your hard work in making this day and this entire year of Girls Take Charge so rewarding.”
