New York State Police to announce teen driving safety campaign, "No Empty Chair", press conference to be held at Shaker High School

Nearly every year, communities across New York State experience the tragic deaths of young high school students in traffic crashes just prior to graduation. On April 17, The New York State Police will announce participation in a week-long, multi-agency, statewide traffic safety campaign aimed at minimizing crashes involving teen drivers, called “No Empty Chair”. »READ MORE

Holocaust Remembrance Ceremony

This year's Holocaust Remembrance ceremony will be held on April 15 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. The White Rose exhibit will be on display and open to the public before and after the ceremony. It is a museum quality exhibit documenting the lives and efforts of the members of The White Rose resistance group to raise awareness about Nazi tyranny. Guest speakers will include Ivan Vamos, a Holocaust survivor, and Ralph Enokian an Armenian genocide lecturer. »LEARN MORE

June 2 school day information

New York State has scheduled the Common Core Geometry Regents for June 2, for an afternoon administration. As a district, we have been charged with creating the optimal testing environment for the 330 students, primarily ninth and tenth graders, who are required to take the exam on June 2. In order to achieve the same testing environment we have had in the past, the high school administration, after consultation with the Superintendent, has decided that June 2 will be a school day only for those students who are required to take the new Common Core Geometry Regents. »READ MORE

Coaches vs. Cancer

The Tri-City ValleyCats’ Friday Night Series is an opportunity for local high schools to
showcase their talent and give back to the community. The ValleyCats are opening
their stadium on three consecutive Fridays for local teams to host charity benefit

Student artwork selected for Annual 3-D Juried Art Exhibition

10 pieces of Shaker High School student artwork were selected to be a part of the Annual Juried Art Exhibition, "Art in Three Dimensions", sponsored by the Capital Area Art Supervisors and Mohonasen High School. This year, 15 school districts submitted 245 pieces and 83 pieces were selected overall. »READ MORE

SHS female computer science students team up with local girl scouts to host a programming workshop

It was a chance for more than a dozen fourth grade students to team up with Shaker High School juniors and seniors, and learn how to use programming software. It’s a skill that is proving to be essential for students aspiring to pursue careers in the field of computer science. »READ MORE

Five SHS students named 2015 National Merit Scholarship Finalists

Out of 16,000 semifinalists, five Shaker High School seniors have met all requirements to qualify as 2015 National Merit Scholarship finalists. This honor places them in a group representing one half of one percent of U.S. high school graduating seniors. »READ MORE

SHS student conducts groundbreaking Alzheimer's disease research, wins Intel STS award

Alzheimer’s is a disease that accounts for 60 to 80 percent of dementia cases, but has no cure. Shaker High School senior, Muhammad Ali, is trying to change that. For three years he has conducted research focused on stopping the disease early on. »READ MORE

Members of Shaker Forum attend 10th annual STOP Conference

Eight members of Shaker Forum, an action and discussion group, joined other area high schools at Siena College’s 10th annual STOP Conference (Students Together Opposing Prejudice) on Jan. 9. Shaker Forum focuses on volunteerism, as well as ways to help the school community. The small club now has its sights set on making a big difference in the high school. »READ MORE

SHS senior has photo published in regional magazine, Adirondack Life

SHS Senior Tim Behuniak has won second place in Adirondack Life’s annual photography contest, a renown regional magazine. He says his love for the outdoors, coupled with his interest in photography, resulted in a childhood which his camera was a big part of. 10 percent of any proceeds Behuniak receives from the sale of his photography will be donated to Shaker High School’s World of Difference Club, a club that does extensive fundraising for U.S. troops overseas.  »READ MORE

2015-16 Program of Study

With the completion of mid-term exams, we must begin to plan for our students’ program of study for the 2015-16 school year through the course selection process. This is a very important process that requires considerable thought and investigation. We recommend that students make initial course selections by April 30. »READ MORE

Four Shaker High School science teachers named NYS Master Teachers by Governor Cuomo

Four Shaker High School science teachers have been selected as New York State Master Teachers, joining a cohort of a content-rich professional development program which has been in effect since the fall of 2013. These teachers join two other North Colonie teachers who earned this award last year, bringing the district’s total number to six. »READ MORE

Statewide graduation data shows overall increase

For Shaker High School, the data shows a graduation rate for 2014 of 93 percent, a one percentage point increase over 2013’s graduation rate of 92 percent. 58 percent of students earned a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation, also a one percent increase from 2013. »READ MORE

Catwalk for a Cause raises $1,600 for Best Buddies

Congratulations to the Shaker Student Government for another successful "Catwalk for a Cause". The event was organized and headed by Stephanie Morgan and Maddie McElrath, raising more than $1,600 for Best Buddies. Shaker High School students earn first place in nationwide engineering competition

Find a problem, develop a solution. That was the task given to Shaker High School seniors Brennan Jelstrom and Kevin Lindsay in their Engineering Capstone class. Over the course of a year, Jelstrom and Lindsay worked together on a project that has now landed them national accolades. »READ MORE

Fall 2014 Senior Workshop presentation now available

The Shaker High School Guidance Department conducted workshops September 16 through September 18 for all students in the senior class regarding the post high school planning process, including critical information about college application submissions. This same presentation with audio is available for all parents of seniors as well as other members of the school community that are interested in learning about this important process. Parental requests of APPR scores

All parents/guardians will have the right to obtain Annual Professional Performance Review (APPR) quality ratings and composite effectiveness scores for their child’s current year’s teacher(s) and principal(s) once the scores are officially available and in accordance with state law. North Colonie plans to provide parents with the scores beginning on October 17, the date by which the final scores are due to New York State. »READ MORE
