November
30, 2007 -
Local veterans—both living and deceased—who served in war in all ranks and
branches of service, were recognized during North Colonie Central
School District’s sixth annual Veterans Day Celebration on Thursday,
Nov. 8 in the Shaker High School Auditorium.
The Wall of Remembrance, which was unveiled
during last year’s celebration, returned from a year-long tour
throughout the community. The Wall showcases the names of veterans
who served in various wars, including the Great War and the current
conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Wall traveled within the
school district, the Town of Colonie, and throughout the State
Capitol building in the Executive Chamber, Albany County Executive
Michael Breslin's office, Senator Neil Breslin's office and
Assemblyman Reilly's office. Prior to its return to North Colonie,
it was hosted by the Times Union Newspaper Plaza.
This year's program featured keynote speaker
Brigadier General Michael Swezey. There was also a moving presentation about a local community veteran and
his reunion with a fellow soldier in Iwo Jima. The Shaker High
School Vocal Ensemble and Chamber Players, along with the Albany
Pipe and Drum Band, provided musical entertainment, while the Siena College Army ROTC Battalion
served as honor guard. Six members of the World of Difference Club—Christie
Chenot, Stephanie June, Lea Kananis, Michael Kowalchyk, Randy Miller
and John Millock—served as the masters of
ceremonies.
The free event, coordinated by Shaker High
School social studies teacher Daniel Weaver, was open to the entire North
Colonie community.
