“The National Honor Society selection process is long and thorough,”
said club advisor Aileen Dirtadian. “The entire Shaker High School
faculty takes this responsibility seriously and carries out the
functions of the selection process in a conscientious manner.”
Students must have a cumulative grade point average of 90 or higher
in order to be considered for membership. In addition, students must
exhibit excellence in four areas—scholarship, leadership, service
and character. These qualities are evaluated by all teachers and
administrators at the high school, as well as extracurricular
activity advisors and coaches.
Each qualified student submits an application form outlining their
activities in school and the community, as well as detailing their
work and leadership experience, volunteerism, awards received and
extracurricular activities. Additionally, all candidates submit an
essay describing their service activities. A committee of teachers
representing both halls and academic areas reviews all of the
submission materials before making the final selections.
