Feb. 25, 2008 - Getting children to try new foods is often
challenging, but success can often lead to a lifetime of healthy
eating habits.
Loudonville students are on the right track. As part of the school’s
Fitness Day in late January, North Colonie’s Director of Food
Services Melodie Marco and food services employee JoAnn France
conducted a “Healthy Choices” seminar to teach students about
healthy choices and the benefits of healthy eating habits.
Adventurous students took a chance trying unfamiliar fruits, new
organic yogurt products and healthier snack options. They sampled
mangos, starfruits, kiwis and pomegranates, while Marco described
their nutritional value, texture and taste.
They were also treated to samples of new organic yogurt products
from Yoplait Yogurt and informed of its nutritional value. Based on
the students’ positive feedback, yogurt will be added to the lunch
menu in the future.
At the end of the seminar, students received samples of "Choose
Sensibly" products such as multi-grain chips and pretzels.
"The morning was informative and fun for students thanks to many
wonderful volunteer presenters,” said Loudonville Principal Kerry
Flynn. “The North Colonie food service presentation was a highlight
of the morning's activities.”
