May 13, 2008 – What could be better than reading a good book with a
special friend by your side? That’s what Blue Creek students have
been discovering with the Paws for Reading Program since it was
established by third-grade teacher Kathy Thompson in October 2007.
Each week former Blue Creek reading specialist Peg Murphy and her
therapy dog, Cricket, visit the school to help students learn to
enjoy reading for pleasure. Their visits have been such a hit that
in February 2008 the program was expanded to include another therapy
dog, Usa, and her handler, Mindy Connors. The Board of Education
approved the purchase of additional books, and Blue Creek Principal
Annette Trapini provided a more comfortable space for the students
and dogs to read together.
Students who are experiencing difficultly reading or haven’t yet
developed a love for reading are selected to participate in the
program. They are not pressured to read in front of classmates or
teachers—they simply grab a book and pet or snuggle up with one of
the dogs.
According to Thompson, the mere presence of the animals increases
students’ comfort levels. Often, they choose to read aloud to their
canine friend—forming a bond with the animal, while building their
reading skills and self-confidence. Murphy and Connors sit quietly
in the room, offering support if a student requests their
assistance.
The program is supported by Therapy Dogs International, a volunteer
group providing qualified handlers and therapy dogs for visitation
in various facilities and settings. The group recognizes what
hospitals and therapists have known for years—pets can lower the
stress level of people during anxious situations. The program does
not take the place of a reading support program; it is an additional
session one day per week.
Blue Creek teachers have reported that program participants are less
anxious about reading and wait excitedly for their sessions with
Cricket or Usa. With the help of these four-legged creatures,
students are developing a life-long love of reading.
