M@SH stands for Military Appreciation at Shaker High!
The goal is to raise awareness of supporting our military:
past, present, and future, and getting fellow students
actively involved in the community. This involvement
includes setting up pen-pals with soldiers stationed both
domestic and overseas and greeting soldiers as they return
home through the Albany International Airport, as well as
attending Honor Flights and Patriot Flights where we can
support World War II, Vietnam, and Korean War veterans
departing to visit national memorials in Washington, D.C.
If you are interested in participating, please contact Dan
Weaver or Ally Crowley-Duncan ’14 at Shaker High School,
dweaver@ncolonie.org. Visit us at
www.shakermash.com.

Every year since 2002, Shaker High School Social
Studies teacher Daniel Weaver, the World of Difference Club and the
Town of Colonie Veterans Project, have paid homage to our country’s
veterans by holding a Veterans Day celebration
The Honorable Daniel P. McCoy, Albany County
Executive, will be on hand to serve as the evening’s keynote
speaker.
You can show your support for veterans and/or
current service members across the country at the celebration by
dedicating a ribbon in their honor. If you would like to
participate,
please download the ribbons linked here, write the name of the
veteran and/or current service member you are honoring on the ribbon
to show your appreciation, and either bring to the ceremony on
November 7th or mail to:
Daniel Weaver
Social Studies Department
Shaker High School

Color suggestions include:
-
White ribbon – in memory of a family member
or friend who gave/lost his/her life in service
-
Blue ribbon – in honor of a family member or
friend who is serving
-
Yellow ribbon – general support and thanks
to all veterans and service members
-
Black ribbon – in recognition of someone who
was a POW or MIA
-
Purple ribbon – if you are an alumni or
community member who is serving or who has served
Throughout the month of October and into
November, The Shaker High School World of Difference Club, Student
Government, and Amnesty International are teaming up to collect
items for Military Moms in Action, and they need your help.
The goal of Miliary Moms in Action is to reach
out and touch the lives of U.S. soldiers, sailors, airmen and
marines with support and encouragement. They accomplish this by
sending soldiers boxes of goodies and letters wherever they are
around the world.
“Our coordinated efforts this year have been
great,” Weaver said. “We are able to send the boxes to specific
troops and units overseas. The outpouring support of students,
staff, and the community is amazing.”
Please consider donating – and encourage others
to do so – some items. You can make a world of difference in a
soldier’s life!

may drop off items to Room B202 in Shaker High School, or send items
to Shaker High School, c/o Dan Weaver.
The eleventh annual Veterans Day Celebration
will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Shaker High School auditorium. All
are welcome to attend.
