Seventh grader Aadya Kaushik with Geography Bee quizmaster, Superintendent D. Joseph Corr.

“Khabarovsk Kray,” Geography Bee quizmaster D. Joseph Corr asked, “is a territory along the Sea of Okhotsk in what country?"

This was the seventh tie-breaker question in a round that had everyone in the room on the edge of their seats. A field of eight was trimmed down to two, as students answered a variety of questions that included verbal, written and map-based responses.

Aadya Kaushik and Nora Klinowski, both seventh graders, were finalists in the annual Shaker Junior High School Geography Bee. The two finished tied after the final round and went to a tie-breaker.

Test your geography knowledge!

Think you know your geography? Try your hand at some of the questions straight from the geography bee! Find the answers at the end of the page!

1. Barrier islands help shelter a nature reserve on Apalachicola Bay, an arm of what large gulf?

2. Name the Asian country at the eastern edge of the South China Sea that includes about 7,100 islands.

3. Timbuktu, a center of caravan trade for almost a thousand years, is located north of the Niger River in which landlocked country?

4. Cologne Cathedral, the largest Gothic church in nothern Europe is located in the Rhineland region of what country?

5. Name the thick layer of Earth's interior that lies between the crust and the core.

The rules of the tie-breaker state the student who answers the question correctly will win, only if his or her opponent answers incorrectly. Both Kaushik and Klinowski split or incorrectly answered each of the previous six questions. As they wrote down their answers on a sheet of paper, both appeared confident that they would emerge victorious.

But only one would prevail after this final question – and Aadya Kaushik knew the correct answer was Russia – making her the 2012 SJHS Geography Bee winner.

Kaushik will now move on to an essay round where if hers is chosen, she will be entered in the state geography bee competition.

“This was quite an exciting competition,” Corr said to the students. “We really have some great geographers here today. This was wonderful.”

The following students participated in the Shaker Junior High School Geography Bee. They all advanced from the preliminary round held December. Each student should be commended for his/her hard work and accomplishment.
