We are fortunate to have a substantial and
appealing collection of books in our Southgate library. A
variety of books are available representing many reading
levels. As the students progress through the years, the
library lessons cover the various fiction genres (mystery and
detective stories, fantasy, realistic and historical fiction,
science fiction) as well as nonfiction, poetry, folktales and
fairy tales. I teach your children how to locate books that
interest them and that are at the “just right” reading level
and encourage them to try some new types of books. They choose
their books from a wide assortment of books and use their
library skills to purposefully browse and evaluate the reading
level. They are guided but encouraged to make their own
selections. We have many displays of books to highlight a
variety of genres, formats and topics. Our aim, by the end of
their elementary school experience, is to expose our students
to all types of books and many different authors and
illustrators and to give them life-long library skills that
can be used at any library.
