on Wednesday to celebrate Peace Day. |
On September 21, Southgate Elementary
School celebrated its third annual Peace Day.
This year’s program was expanded to be
incorporated into the newly developed Peaceable Schools program
allowing for the tenets of Peace Day to be carried throughout the
school year.

As part of this year’s program, students
shared their writing describing what peace means to them. Themes
shared included helping one another, celebrate peace every day,
and cooperation. Student speakers included Corey Ditzel, Savannah
Sidoti, Matthew Ulberg, Cathleen Mahoney, and Nyla Sams. Special
guests included members of the Board of Education as well as
Superintendent Mr. Corr and Assistant Superintendent Ms. Skeals.
Other components of the assembly included the
introduction of the Peace Pole. The Peace Pole will be used
throughout the school year to display ribbons representing acts of
community and character demonstrated by groups of students and/or
classes. The Peace Pole will remain on display in the Southgate
lobby for all to see.
All of the attendees along with each student,
faculty and staff member were provided a t – shirt displaying the
Southgate School Peaceable School’s logo which all wore to the
assembly (View
design). The goal of the t – shirts is to demonstrate
community. They will be worn by all on future Spirit Days which
will focus on building community and important character traits
such as respect, responsibility, and perseverance. T – shirts were
able to be provided to all through the generous donations of
community members.
The ceremony closed with the singing of this
year’s theme song “We Can Change The World”.
