February 26, 2010 - Southgate students and
staff were decked out in purple and white on Friday, some
more liberally than others, as they came together in
celebration of the 100th day of school.
In recognition, Southgate classes posted signs around the school
listing the 100 things they like the most about Southgate
Elementary. Signs ranged from the adoration of teachers to the
love of the monthly Spirit Days.
In addition, the Homespun Community Dance group, who are doing a
residency at Southgate on February 26 and March 1, led students
in a variety of dances from different cultures. The purpose is
to explore the importance of traditional music and community
dance. The group asks students to think about what entertainment
was like for people who lived one or two hundred years ago.
Surely they could not download music, so entertainment was
provided by singing, dancing and playing musical instruments.
After a few minutes of instruction, the students picked up the
new moves, almost as if they had practiced them for years.
Laughter and smiles filled the gymnasium on this snowy Friday
morning.
The students will be showing off some of their new dance skills
next Friday, March 5, at Southgate Family Fitness Night.
