January
13, 2010 - “What river,” event moderator, Superintendent Randy
Ehrenberg asked, “forms the border between Oklahoma and Texas?”
This was the eighth tie-breaker question in a round that had
everyone in the room on the edge of their seats. Keyshawn Gomes,
a seventh grader and Michael Lewis, an eighth grader, were
finalists in the Shaker Junior High School Geography Bee. The
two finished tied after the final round and went to a
tie-breaker. The rules of the tie-breaker state the student who
answers the question correctly will win, only if his or her
opponent answers incorrectly. Both Gomes and Lewis split or
incorrectly answered each of the previous seven questions. As
they wrote down their answers on a sheet of paper, both appeared
confident that they would emerge victorious. Michael Lewis wrote
down the Mississippi River, while Keyshawn Gomes (pictured
above, center, along with SJHS Principal Dr. Russell Moore and
North Colonie Superintendent, Randy Ehrenberg) countered with
the Red River, which turned out to be the correct answer.
