November
5, 2009 - Popular children’s author and illustrator, Bruce
Hiscock, visited Southgate Elementary on November 5.
Hiscock’s books are mostly about nature. He spoke to Southgate
students about how he became interested in writing and drawing.
Hiscock grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan and lived on the outside
of town, where there were many fields and woods to roam around
in. A few years later, Hiscock moved to Shemya, Alaska, a small
island in the western Aleutians. He has always had a love for
nature, and it is that love, along with his passion for travel
that inspires his books.
Hiscock sketched a few drawings for the students on a large pad
and showed pictures of his boyhood home in Alaska. Students also
received the opportunity to draw their own pictures, proving
that some may have a future as an illustrator.
