June 4, 2009 - Dozens of Shaker High School seniors were honored for outstanding achievement in academics, art, music, sportsmanship, service to the community and numerous other categories at the annual Senior Awards Ceremony on Thursday, May 14.

Among the nearly 100 awards bestowed upon students were the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award, the National School Orchestra Association Award, the Shaker Theater Award for Best Performance in Drama, the American Association of Physics Teachers Award, the Shaker High School Regents Exam Award, the Student Government Award, and many, many others.

Students were also honored for achievements such as recognition by the National Merit and National Achievement Scholarship programs, placing in the top 5 percent of the 2009 graduating class and perfect attendance for as many as seven years in a row.

Students received a plaque or certificate of recognition with the award, and some awards also included scholarship money.

Principal Richard Murphy described the awards as the culmination of the students' time at the high school.

"All of these students have distinguished themselves through their commitment to their studies the past four years," he said.
